The term "Vinyasa," when used in the context of yoga instruction, means “to link breath and movement." Taken in this very general sense, then, there are many contemporary forms of Vinyasa yoga. Here at Yoga Shala, we emphasize breathing (ujjayi), physical postures (asana), and self-awareness (atmajnana). The classes are often set to music and focus on continual movement. The classes are physically demanding, but always adapted to the level of class being taught.  The classes usually begin with sun salutations, move through a long set of standing postures, then through a set of seated postures, and end with a closing sequence of postures and rest (meditation --- savasana).

The Vinyasa style of yoga also focuses on the breath and sequencing the postures and transitions between postures with the breath. The primary difference between Vinyasa and Ashtanga is that the postures in Vinyasa can be mixed and varied, and can be geared to focus on particular areas of practice, for instance balancing postures, backbending postures, and hip opening postures.
